STOP the urge: 5 Simple Ways to Shop Under Control

February 26, 2019

Gone are the days when the consumer had limited options while shopping for food, clothing and house items. In this 21st century, technology and innovation had made consumers hooked to new brands and new ways of shopping. Consumers have started making hasty buying decisions and are not mindful of their money.

I truly believe that in today’s world ‘Customer is the King’ and marketers strive hard to give the best service to customers. But, THINK? How many times you have bought items which you are hardly going to use and spend heaps of money. As much as I believe, shopping is a therapeutic practice and can cure almost everything! I understand, it’s very hard to control your shopping habits especially when you see those big discounts in shopping malls, but we all have to implement change within us and understand the problems associated with compulsive shopping.

All you got to do is put yourself together, set achievable goals and work towards it. With time you will realise shopping for necessary items has not only helped you saved money but made you feel content.

I want to share one of my experiences which not only helped me cutting back on my daily coffee expense but made me realise how ‘just a cup of coffee’ worth $3.50 eventually turned up to $1200 by the end of the year. Therefore, think of those daily habits which you can bring change in, start small and you will see a difference yourself.

These 5 action steps will not only curb those impulse spending habits for good but also create a positive change within you:

  1. Keep your credit card at home - We all love to swipe credit cards and then we forget to keep a tab on our spendings. The best way to cure this addiction is to leave your credit cards at home and only use when you ‘REALLY’ need it.
  2. Create weekly lists - Creating weekly lists of grocery or household items. It will help you stay organised and not spend on unnecessary items.
  3. Stop going to the mall during the festive season - Stay away from those mall advertisements and attractive shopping stores instead choose different outing places which will divert your attention from shopping and make your day more productive and fruitful.
  4. Consider online shopping - Online shopping sites always have mega sale or discounts going on. It helps you to shop at your own leisure and thus keeps you calm which never happens when you are in the shopping mall.
  5. Dream big - Save money for buying a house, car or an expensive gift for your loved one. Dream big and think of spending money on things which will make a difference in your life.

These simple steps will teach you to plan your expenses way ahead before you realise there is no way out. Do not let the spending control you, let it happen the other way.

All in all there are some days when you just can’t stop shopping for you and your loved ones. We all are allowed to have those cheat days but make sure you balance it out.

By having a set game-plan will definitely help you achieve a responsible way of shopping. We all understand managing expenses can be so stressful but don’t you worry.
